General Information About Summer Practices

There are two summer practices in the METU PETE undergraduate program. The rules and procedures applicable to these summer practice activities are provided below:

You must find a suitable place for your summer practice. This is entirely your responsibility. However, some companies allocate quotas for students coming from our department following correspondence between the department and the companies. Quotas are determined by the companies and distributed by the department, taking into account the cumulative grade point averages (CGPA) of the applying students. Please keep in mind that these quotas are usually limited. You will be informed about the quotas and application periods throughout the semester.

Course Coordinator: Asst. Prof. Mehmet Onur Doğan

Assistant Course Coordinator: Res. Asst. İnanç Alptuğ Hıdıroğlu

Before Leaving

1. The summer practice must be a minimum of 20 working days.

2. After the summer practice location is finalized, at the earliest 20 days and at the latest 10 days before your start date, you must fill out the Excel file in the link, attach it to your e-mail, and send it to pete@metu.edu.tr <mailto:pete@metu.edu.tr>. This process should not be done if there are more than 20 days left before the summer practice, and you should wait for the final 20-day window. This process is only required for summer practices to be conducted within Turkey.

3. Before starting the summer practice, the insurance declaration form must be obtained through personal e-Government (e-Devlet) accounts. This document will be submitted by the student to the workplace where the internship will be conducted (You cannot obtain this document unless the step above is completed).

4. You must download your summer practice logbooks from here, fill in the required fields, paste your photo, and take it with you when going to your summer practice. Before taking the booklet, you must write your name and sign the list. Photos will be pasted on the first page and on the 3rd (within Turkey) or 4th (outside Turkey) page.

5. In addition, the following matters communicated by the university unit that processes and tracks the insurance procedures of our students who will undertake summer practices must be complied with:

          i. After the Social Security Institution (SGK) employment registration and termination declarations are processed, they can be queried and downloaded by students via the SGK application on their e-Government accounts.

ii. SGK notifications are made on a weekly basis. Correction or cancellation procedures can be made before the legally recognized period (summer practice start date) in the system. Cancellation or modification procedures cannot be performed after the legal period (summer practice start date).

iii. For students who are required to complete two summer practices, there must be a gap of at least 1 day between the two practices.

iv. Same-day and retroactive SGK notifications, as well as notifications not made within their legal periods, cause administrative monetary fines. For this reason, intern student information forms must be submitted in advance with a future date.

          v. The contribution forms to be submitted for the İŞKUR-YÖK-State Contribution application must be verified for compliance with the application guidelines and accuracy of information, confirming that the student received the wage payment at the end of the summer practice period before submission.

vi. Students working as Part-Time Students in our university's Departments or Units must leave their current duties for their summer practices.

vii. For long-term summer practices, the Summer Practice Coordinator or the Department Chair must be informed.

During the Summer Practice

6. Take photos, keep a daily journal, and take notes.

7. Fill out the Summer Practice Summary weekly to summarize your work for each working week. This report must be checked and signed by the authorized engineer.

8. Request the company to send the 3rd page of the booklet to our department or hand it to you in a signed / stamped sealed envelope. Summer Practice Summaries must be submitted in the same manner.

9. In addition, request the company to send the Summer Practice Evaluation Form to our department after it is filled out, signed, and graded by the authorized engineer, or to hand it to you in a signed / stamped sealed envelope.

After Returning

10. Register for the appropriate course (PETE300 or PETE400) at the beginning of the next semester. If a student does not register for the summer practice course within 2 (two) semesters following the completion of the practice, the practice will be deemed invalid (U) and must be repeated.

11. Check the announcements made for report submissions.

12. Do not forget to check with the secretariat before the end of the semester to ensure whether your grades and Summer Practice Summary have reached the department.

13. Follow the announcements and send your summer practice reports to the responsible research assistant accordingly. You must use the summer practice report format when writing your reports.

Suitable Summer Practice Companies

You can find the list of companies for possible summer practices in the attached file. If you have found a company not included in the list, you must consult the department regarding its suitability.
