What is petroleum engineering?

Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering is an engineering branch that deals with the topics related to the exploration, production, transportation, and marketing of

  • petroleum,
  • natural gas,
  • geothermal energy,
  • and groundwater.

Technically, petroleum and natural gas engineering is concerned with all kinds of studies required to put naturally occurring or subsequently stored underground energy into service.

What does a petroleum engineer do?

  • Tries to determine where and in what quantities petroleum and natural gas are located.
  • Takes necessary measures to ensure that drilling operations are carried out economically, safely, and rapidly, and supervises drilling activities.
  • Conducts research to develop and innovate petroleum and natural gas extraction methods.
  • Prepares projects related to the storage and transportation of crude oil and natural gas.

What qualifications should a Petroleum Engineer have?

  • Must possess a high level of academic ability and numerical reasoning power,
  • Be able to plan and implement a project,
  • Have a strong desire to research a topic in depth,
  • Work in an organized and methodical manner,
  • Pay attention to details,
  • Be good observers and creative individuals.

Working Environment and Conditions

  • Petroleum and natural gas engineers carry out their duties under various conditions (in the field, office, and laboratories). Engineers working especially in the field must be resilient against harsh conditions.
  • Petroleum and natural gas engineers have to work in cooperation with geological engineers, mining engineers, technicians, and workers. Their duties may frequently require travel.

Where do our graduates work?

  • Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO),
  • Turkish Petroleum International Company (TPIC),
  • Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (ETKB),
  • General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA),
  • Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAŞ),
  • General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ),
  • Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK),
  • In domestic and foreign operator companies such as Shell, BP, Guney Yildizi, etc.,
  • In service companies such as GEOS, Middle East, etc.,
